Description

12 Wardie Square in Edinburgh is a terrace of 13 cottages built around 1850, with some alterations and additions. These cottages are single storey with an attic and feature piended dormers. The exterior is made of harled brick, painted in shades of white, cream, grey, and brown, with stone dressings and architraved openings.

On the northern (principal) elevation, numbers 10-16 display alternating two-bay reversed plans. Number 8 has a three-bay layout with stone steps leading up to the central entrance. Number 9 has been significantly altered to include three bays with the entrance on the left. Number 17 features a three-bay design with a window above the central door, while number 18 appears to be three-bay but the right bay likely belongs to number 19. Number 20 is two-bay with the entrance on the right. Most doors are boarded timber with rectangular fanlights, except for a replacement glazed door at number 9 and a narrow two-leaf replacement door at number 19.

The southern (rear) elevation has been substantially altered and extended for most properties. The eastern elevation is built into a slope. The western elevation has a coped gable end with two small windows on the upper floor.

Most windows have been replaced, including small-pane PVCu glazing on numbers 8, 9, and 12, as well as timber frames. Numbers 11 and 17 feature single large panes and smaller top-hung casements. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are coped sandstone ridge stacks, most of which are rendered, although those on numbers 8 and 9 are missing and replaced with round cans.

The interiors have not been inspected since 1997.
