6 Magdala Mews, Edinburgh

1 Magdala Mews in Edinburgh is a pair of two-storey mews houses built between 1869 and 1879 by John Chesser, arranged around a courtyard. The buildings are constructed of squared and snecked rubble, featuring raised cills to the windows.

On the southwest elevation (Nos 1-2), there are two entrance doors in the first bay to the right (No 1) with a small window above. The second, third, and fourth bays contain three timber garage doors, with bipartite windows above them; the windows in the second and fourth bays have stone mullions. The fifth bay features a converted garage with timber and glazing doors, and above it is a bipartite window with a stone mullion. The end bay on the left (No 2) has a single door with a three-pane over-light, a very small window above, and attic lights.

The northwest elevation (No 3) includes a door with a three-pane over-light in the right bay, two garage doors adjacent to it, and bipartite windows above. There is also a very small window above the door and an attic light.

On the northeast elevation (Nos 4-5), there is a garage door in the right bay with two single windows above. The second bay has a door with a four-pane over-light (No 4), while the third and fourth bays contain timber garage doors and two single windows above. The fifth bay features a door with a four-pane over-light (No 5) and a single window in the sixth bay at both ground and first floor levels. The left bay has a garage door with a single light above and attic lights for No 4.

The southeast elevation (Nos 6-7) has a garage door in the right bay with a single window above, followed by single windows in the second bay. The third bay contains a door with an over-light (No 6), while the fourth bay has a garage door with two single windows above. The fifth bay features a door with an over-light and a flanking window (No 7a), with two single windows above. The sixth bay has a garage door and a bipartite window with a stone mullion above. The left bay has a door with a three-pane over-light (No 7) and a single window above.

The buildings showcase a variety of glazing patterns and are topped with a grey slate roof, featuring straight skews at the dividing walls and mutual coped stacks.
