Description

The Gateway Theatre, located at 40, 41, 42, 43, and 44 Elm Row in Edinburgh, was designed by George Beattie and Sons in 1882. This classical building features a symmetrical, four-storey, five-bay front elevation, although the ground floor has a modern frontage. The first floor showcases channelled rustication, while the upper floors are finished in polished ashlar. The rear of the building is predominantly brick with stone dressings and includes large extensions from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fenestration is regular throughout.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, modern doors are set in recessed openings in the first and third bays from the left at the ground floor. There is a dividing band between the ground and first floors, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and a dentilled cornice separating the first and second floors. The second floor has a moulded cill course, while the third floor features a corbelled moulded cill course. The elevation is topped with a broken eaves band, an eaves cornice, and a balustraded parapet. Panelled pilasters with segmental pediments crowned by acroters are located at the outer left and right of the first floor. The first floor windows have recessed, pilastered surrounds with rosettes on the outer left and right lintels, while the second floor windows are architraved and corniced, and the third floor windows are simply architraved.

At the rear, there is a large collection of various additions from different periods. The northeast side features a brick elevation with blocked segmental openings on the first floor, buttresses that define the bays, and a corbel table at the eaves.

In terms of glazing, the ground floor has plate glass, while the upper floors predominantly feature four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. However, there are some out-of-character timber 'tilt and turn' windows in the first, second, and third bays from the left on the first floor, as well as in the fourth and fifth bays from the left on the third floor. The roof is pitched with some flat-roofed sections at the rear, covered in grey slates. The principal elevation has two corniced ashlar wallhead stacks flanking the central bay, along with one corniced ashlar ridge stack on each outer side, all featuring circular cans.
