Description
24 Brighton Place in Edinburgh is a pair of classical terraced houses built around 1824 by John Baxter of Portobello. These two-storey (possibly with a basement) houses feature three bays and are complemented by single-storey pavilions that are slightly set back. The front is finished in polished ashlar that is deeply channelled at the ground level, while the pavilions have droved ashlar (now sandtexed at No 24) and the basement is also droved ashlar. The northeast elevation and the rear of No 22 are harled, as are the southwest elevation and rear of No 24. Band courses separate the basement from the ground floor and the ground floor from the first floor, with a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with a band course and coping on the pavilions.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are four concrete steps leading to deep-set doors; No 22 has an Edinburgh panelled door with original cast-iron handrails, while No 24 features a two-leaf modern panelled door. Above each door are plate glass rectangular fanlights and windows. There are windows on each floor in the intermediate bays, and each wing has a window and a boarded door.
The northwest (rear) elevation is not fully visible as of 1994, but it features blank bays at the first floor of each house and single-storey extensions at the centre bays of both houses. The principal elevation and the rear of No 24 have plate glass timber sash and case windows, while No 22 has 12-pane timber sash and case windows at the rear. The houses have a grey slate piended roof with a platform roof at the apex, and the rear extensions also have piended roofs. There are rendered and coped mutual stacks at the front and rear, a partially harled ashlar wallhead at the rear of No 22, a harled and coped wallhead stack on the northeast elevation, and a rendered and coped wallhead stack at the rear of No 24 and on the southwest elevation.
The interiors were not fully seen in 1994, but shutters are in place at No 22, with some or all in working order. The boundary walls in front of both houses are made of droved ashlar with coping, although they are now broken.
