Description

12, 14, and 16 Dundas Street is a terraced tenement building from the early 19th century, likely designed by Thomas Bonnar. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features nine bays, with the fourth bay from the left recessed. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone and showcases V-jointed rustication at the principal floor, except for the recessed bay. There are band courses between the basement and principal floors, as well as between the principal and first floors. The first-floor windows have projecting cills, except in three bays on the left, while the second-floor windows also have projecting cills. A continuous cornice runs along the second floor, and there is a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the principal elevation, the fourth bay from the left has a panelled timber common stair door. The third bay from the left includes a round-arched doorpiece with a six-panel timber door and a plate glass semicircular fanlight. To the right, there is a five-bay shop front for No. 16, which features a two-leaf glazed door in a round-arched doorpiece, with a lowered entrance platt creating a rectangular fanlight above a semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows. The upper floors and basement have regular fenestration.

The northeast and southeast elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are listed separately. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a geometric glazing pattern on the principal and first floors of No. 12, which also has decorative window guards at the first floor. The second and third floors of No. 12 have plate glass windows. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. Broached ashlar ridge stacks are coped and have circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
