3 John Street, Rothesay, Bute

4 John Street in Rothesay, Bute, consists of four early 19th century cottages, dated 1805, which were restored in the late 20th century. These single-storey, three-bay cottages form a twelve-bay terrace that was originally built for cotton mill workers. To the right, there is a single-storey, six-bay cottage, built around 1935 and also refurbished in the late 20th century, situated on a tapering site.

The cottages at Nos 1-4 feature whitewashed harl with painted margins, stepped hoodmoulds above the openings, and projecting cills. The southwest entrance elevation includes replacement timber doors at the centre of each cottage, with 8-light fanlights above and single windows flanking them. A sandstone plaque inscribed "Cotton Mill Society 1805" is centrally located. For No 5, there is an off-set replacement timber door to the right of centre, with single windows in three bays to the left and two bays to the right.

All cottages have 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Nos 1-4 have a graded grey slate roof with a pitched design, while No 5 has a similar slate roof with an end piend. The properties feature replacement rainwater goods, coped harled ridges, and apex stacks that are evenly spaced, along with various circular cans.

The interiors were not seen during the 1996 inspection.
