3 And 6 Lower Square, Lighthouse Shore Establishment, Hynish, Tiree

4 Upper Square, Lighthouse Shore Establishment, Hynish, Tiree, was built mainly between 1837 and 1840 by Alan Stevenson for the construction and maintenance of Skerryvore Lighthouse. The buildings are primarily made of large masonry blocks, with either flat or slated roofs.

The main features include a HARBOUR constructed of rock-faced ashlar, and a DOCK that originally had guiding rails for a locking gate, which is now gone, as well as a hand-operated derrick. A PIER extends from the west side.

The SEAMEN'S BARRACKS, originally housing for workers and now privately owned, is a two-storey row that steps down the slope, with a deep plan, gabled and slated roofs, and lower courtyard buildings to the rear.

The KEEPER'S HOUSES in Upper Square are distinctive and solid, resembling other lighthouse keeper's housing designed by Stevenson. They feature Egyptianised details, are single-storey with flat roofs, ashlar facades, massive doorways, a rank of stacks at the wallhead, and small walled gardens.

The SIGNAL TOWER, now a museum, dates from the 20th century and has a plaque indicating it was in use from 1844 to 1937 for semaphore signaling to Skerryvore Lighthouse. It is a circular tower with a deep corbelled cornice/platform near the top, constructed of ashlar and windowed at the top.

Additional structures include long single-storey stores that step down to the slope, a RESERVOIR used for flushing silt from the dock basin that remains operational as of 1989, and a COAL STORE that is now neglected. There are also a series of garden walls, enclosures, and small peripheral buildings.
