Description

1, 2, 3, 4 Pensioners Row in Campbeltown are early 19th century single storey and attic terraced cottages arranged in an L-plan. In the later 19th century, the cottages were raised to include attic spaces, which are now accessed by stair towers. The elevations facing New Quay Street and Kilkerran Road were substantially refurbished in 1994 and 1995. The buildings feature random rubble walls with a base course and droved ashlar margins at the corners, as well as margins and projecting cills at the windows.

The northwest elevation on New Quay Street has nine bays that are irregularly spaced. Former doors have been blocked and converted into windows, while a door with closely grouped windows is retained in the seventh bay. The southwest elevation on Kilkerran Road has a blank bay on the outer left, followed by seven windows to the right, with one window blocked from a former door.

The rear elevations are roughcast and were rebuilt in 1995, featuring new openings and apsidal access stair towers. The cottages have modern timber windows styled as 4-pane sash and case. The roof is made of grey Spanish slate, piended at the corner, with concealed flashings and cast-iron gutters and downpipes. There are roughcast coped 4-flue apex and ridge stacks with circular cans. Each bay, except for the blank bay, has piend-roofed, slate-hung timber dormers that break the eaves and have projecting cills on the northwest elevation.
