Description

The Arbroath Community Centre, originally a townhouse and later a drill hall, is a three-storey, three-bay classical building located on Marketgate. It dates from the late 1780s, while the two-storey, one- and two-bay stepped wings and the hall at the rear were designed and built by William Scott in 1883. The original townhouse was likely modified by Scott for use as offices and storage for the drill hall. In 1969, the building underwent further alterations to become a sports and community centre.

The east elevation facing Marketgate features pink snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, while the side elevations are made of squared rubble with pinnings. The structure includes a base course and an eaves course, with a central entrance door that has a pilastered and corniced doorpiece. The corners of the Marketgate block have raised long and short quoins, and there is a segmental-arched opening (now infilled) on the lower right wing, along with a full-width late 20th-century glazed entrance on the left wing. The windows are primarily timber sash and case with four panes, and the roof is covered with grey slates and has a piended design.

At the rear, the large hall features a roof that resembles an upturned boat and is constructed of squared rubble. The rear elevation is rendered, bowed, and gabled, featuring a central door with a corniced doorpiece, a pair of tall round-arched windows, and a round window in the gablehead.

The interior was last seen in 2015. The former office section retains some 19th-century details, including timber panelled doors and plaster cornices. The hall itself is a spacious barrel-shaped area supported by cast iron ribs and timber trusses, with timber boarding infill, and the viewing balcony remains in place at the east end.
