Description
The Gladiator Gate and North Lodge at Glamis Castle date from the late 17th century and were re-erected on this site in the late 18th century. The structure features square-section ashlar gatepiers adorned with gladiator sculptures and castellated Tudor screen walls, complete with hoodmoulds and stone mullions.
On the west elevation, the tall piers have a pilastered front, a cornice, and large carved orb finials. The lower flanking bays display gladiators, while crenellated screen walls extend to the right, featuring a pedestrian gateway to the left and two bipartite windows in the center, which are blinded with diamond-pattern glazing. The outer crenellation is broader, and the wall slopes down to a lower square-section pier at the outer right, with boundary walls adjoining beyond. The screen wall on the left mirrors that on the right.
The east elevation has lower piers at the center with crouching lions. To the left is a pedestrian gateway, leading to a slated piend-roofed rubble lodge beyond, which has two windows and a boarded timber door on the return to the right. There is also a pedestrian gateway to the right of the center, with evidence of a similar building beyond.
The gates are decorative wrought-iron.
