Description
The Inglis Memorial Hall and library, built in 1897-8 by C & L Ower, is a prominent example of Scots Baronial architecture. It stands on High Street, Edzell. The hall is a two-storey, rectangular building with a three-bay front and a particularly striking five-stage clock tower centrally positioned on the west (principal) elevation. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with a base course, band courses, cornice, and crenellated parapet. Bartizans are incorporated into the corners.
The west elevation presents a symmetrical facade. A projecting, open-sided porch with a broken segmental arched pediment depicting "Inglis Memorial Hall" in mosaic is centrally located. The porch features round-arched openings supported by piers with engaged Corinthian columns and pilasters. Steps lead to a timber-panelled vestibule with tiled flooring. A pair of timber doors with side panels and a large, decorative fanlight leads into the building. Above the porch rises the round clock tower, capped with an octagonal, stone-slated spire and lucarnes. The fourth stage is octagonal, featuring corbelled bays with alternating clock faces and balconied areas, finished with a dentilled cornice. Symmetrical gabled bays flank the tower.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring six bays. A bowed bay with four lights is present on the lower ground floor to the left, above which are small, square eight-light windows. To the far right is a lower, single bay. The central three bays have tall three-light windows, with smaller nine-pane windows above. The north elevation is similarly asymmetrical, with a bowed bay to the lower ground on the right and a crow-stepped gable to the left.
The building has predominantly fixed glazing with stained glass, alongside some casement windows with diamond-pane leaded glass on the upper storey. The roof is covered in graded grey slates, with corniced apex stacks to the gables. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior retains its original room layout and is of high decorative quality, comprising two public halls, a separate library, and several other rooms. The entrance hall features decorative glazed tiles and a tesserae tiled floor. The main hall has a timber gallery and stage, with segmental arches dividing bays and clerestory windows to the north. Panelled timber doors are found throughout, alongside simple cornicing, high skirtings, and decorative timber fire surrounds. Stained glass depicting flora, fauna, family crests, and Scots mottos is abundant.
The library, located to the left of the entrance, features a wrought iron spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine level with metal railing and an upper floor. It contains integral timber bookcases, timber panelling, a part-glazed timber screen with a door, and a Cotgreave Indicator.
To the west and south of the property are boundary walls and gatepiers. A low coped ashlar wall runs to the west, punctuated by pairs of gatepiers with base courses, pyramidal caps, and lamp standards. A taller coped wall extends along the south boundary.
