Description
Castle Fraser is a large 4-storey and attic Z-plan main tower house with wings that enclose a northern courtyard. It was probably originally designed around 1576 by Thomas Leiper, with the western (Michael) tower being built first, followed shortly by part of the central block. The building was extended to its current Z-plan layout around 1592, with the hall paved by James Leiper in 1614. The elaborate upper parts, featuring a coat of arms, were completed by John Bol between 1617 and 1618, as indicated by an inscription and date. The wings, known as Laich Biggings, were constructed between 1621 and 1636, likely by James Leiper. The central block measures 54 feet by 32 feet 10 inches, the square tower is 31 feet high, and the round tower has a diameter of 28 feet and stands 77 feet tall. The hall is vaulted and includes a "laird's lug." There is some late 18th-century interior work, likely from 1795, when a large domed staircase and arcades were inserted in the courtyard, although these have recently been removed. The fine southern doorway features a cavetto splay. The northern gate and flanking buildings were added around 1820, and the bellcote incorporates older reused materials.
