Description
No 3 Old Mains Cottages in Fasque is likely from the early to mid 19th century and is part of an interesting and unusual group of single-storey cottages. The southern range features pointed arch windows with decorative astragals, while to the east is a single-storey and attic former schoolhouse, and to the west is a plainer range, all forming a U-plan around a communal courtyard garden. The buildings are constructed from squared red sandstone rubble, with some Aberdeen bond present in Nos 1 and 6. The structure includes ashlar and squared rubble quoins, some of which are droved, and voussoirs.
The former schoolmaster's house, No 1, is a 6-bay structure to the east, likely converted from two cottages. Its courtyard elevation has a panelled timber door located to the left of centre, with two windows to the left and three to the right. There are also two slate-hung canted dormer windows over the outer bays and a small modern rooflight in the centre.
Nos 3, 4, and 5 make up the southern range, which has a piend roof and asymmetrical pointed arch openings. The doors on the courtyard elevation are all boarded timber with decoratively-astragalled fanlights, although some window openings have been blocked.
No 6 is a long, slightly lower range to the west, featuring square-headed openings. Its 3-bay courtyard elevation includes a door to the left and windows to the right.
The cottages have multi-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofs, and traditional small cast iron rooflights. The chimneys are made of coped brick and harl with cans, and the skews are ashlar-coped with square skewputts. There are also cast iron downpipes.
