Description

Todhead Lighthouse, dating from 1897 and engineered by David A Stevenson, is a circular tower with a projecting cornice, a corbelled gallery, and a lantern dome. The exterior is finished in harl with exposed stone dressings. The light was converted to electric power in 1973 and automated in 1986. In 2007, the light was decommissioned and the original optic system, including the machine with its clockwork mechanism and lens, was removed and donated to the National Museum of Scotland. The lighthouse is documented in records from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and on an Ordnance Survey map of 1901. Further information is available from the Dictionary of Scottish Architects.
