Description
Buchanness Cottage, built in 1840 by John Smith as Buchanness Lodge for Lord Aberdeen, is a simple classic marine villa made of granite ashlar. The south front features a two-storey, three-window layout, with a central section that projects forward, showcasing a doorpiece with a consoled and block pediment inscribed with "PROCVL NEGOTIIS BEATVS." The design is asymmetrical, with a west wing that is set back and includes a single-storey flat-roofed section, although the windows in this section have been remodelled. The east front, which faces the sea, is also asymmetrical, featuring a canted bay on the south side and a later bay window on the north side. The building has a low-pitched, broad-eaved roof and displays good cast-iron work at the clifftop terraces.
