1 Kirkton Cottages (Former Poorhouse), Craigwell

2 Kirkton Cottages, formerly a poorhouse, dates back to the early 19th century. It consists of two single-storey, rectangular-plan rows of former poorhouses, made up of two 8-bay cottages (originally eight 2-bay cottages) and a single 8-bay cottage (originally four 2-bay cottages). The exterior is harled.

The south elevations are near-symmetrical, with a layout that repeats every four bays. There is a door in the penultimate bay on the right, flanked to the left by a 2-light window with a projecting cill. There is also a window in the outer left bay and another in the outer right bay. Cottage No 1 has a boarded timber door, Cottage No 2 has a boarded and glazed timber door, and Cottage No 3 features a modern panelled and glazed timber door. Cottage No 1 has four regularly placed 2-pane skylights.

The west and east elevations are gabled and blank. The north elevations are symmetrical, with two regularly placed windows with top hoppers for Cottage No 1. Cottages Nos 2 and 3 have four regularly placed windows, with two 2-pane windows with top hoppers on the left and two 2-pane sash and case windows on the right.

Cottages No 1 and No 2 have 2-pane timber casement windows, while Cottage No 3 features both 2-pane and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a tiled ridge, with stone skews and coped harled gableheads. The ridge stacks have circular cans, and there are cast-iron gutters with PVCu downpipes.

The interiors were not seen in 1998.
