Description
Balfluig Castle, dated 1556 on the voussoirs of the doorway, is an L-plan structure with three storeys and a tall, slim southeast tower that rises five storeys. The castle features an unusual plan that includes a circular stair tower, which connects the two sections and contains a prison cell within the thickness of the staircase wall. It is roughly built from pinned boulder rubble, with dressings made of both granite and sandstone. The angles of the building are rounded and corbelled to a square shape near the wallhead, with corbels present for a brattice at the second floor level on the east side. The interior has been altered, and the roof was reported to be in a ruinous state as of 1965.
