207 Union Street, Aberdeen

209 and 211 Union Street in Aberdeen is a public house and restaurant built around 1830-1835, with No 213 remodeled by Harbourne Maclennan of Jenkins and Marr in 1925. This well-detailed establishment occupies part of the ground floor of a three-storey and attic tenement, which features eleven bays arranged in a three-five-three pattern. The building is constructed of simple granite ashlar in a classical style, although the remaining ground floor shop fronts have been modernized. Notable architectural features include a first-floor band course, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course, with some round and segmental-headed, voussoired openings still visible at ground level.

The principal elevation is symmetrical and faces north, showcasing regular fenestration on the first and second floors. The ground floor features a deep-set, two-leaf, part-glazed timber door with a semicircular fanlight at the center. To the right, Number 213 has a three-bay shopfront made of bronze panels and frosted glass, adorned with classical swag decoration on the flanking pilasters and frieze, along with a central fascia. The outer shop fronts retain arcading.

The windows are primarily timber sash and case, featuring a largely four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with some cans and ashlar-coped skews.

Inside Number 213, known as The Grill, the interior has seen little alteration since the Jenkins and Marr renovation. It includes exceptional plasterwork on the shallow vaulted ceiling that defines a long narrow bar and a small circular space separated by a broad segmental arch. The walls are panelled with mahogany veneer, and there are mahogany doors, a gantry, and a bar counter. The gantry features three display cabinets with decorative astragals, the central one topped with a segmental pediment. The bar counter has plaques with a relief-carved letter 'G' and brass match strikers. Leather-covered banquettes line the wall opposite the bar.
