Description
The Main Block of Comb Works, located at 4-5 Ivory Court and 38-40 Hutcheon Street in Aberdeen, dates from around 1830 to 1840, with additional structures added in the 1830s. This complex of industrial and office buildings was originally developed as comb works and underwent restoration in 1970 after a fire in 1969. It was altered for office use in 1981. The original L-plan block is three stories high with an attic, featuring 11 x 11 bays. Later additions form a courtyard. The exterior is constructed of plain granite rubble with slate roofs that include Velux windows. A curved forestair with cast-iron railings is located at the main front.
The gable elevation facing Hutcheon Street has a corniced stack and round-headed windows on the first and second floors, along with casement windows. The ground floor features glazed openings on the main return.
Later additions include an east wing with a shaped aedicule gable and low single-storey 'gateway' wings that have later dormers and ashlar-coped gables with corniced stacks on the returns. The entrance is marked by ball-finialled piers made of ashlar, with slate roofs and sash and case windows. The courtyard is setted.
Inside, a panelled 'private office' has been converted into a board room, but the interior has not been seen.
