Description

This is a substantial, later 19th-century palace terrace of forty bays, built between the later 1800s and 1864-7. The terrace comprises two-bay and three-bay houses, along with a four-bay central block and three-bay terminal pavilions. The construction utilizes rough-faced coursed grey granite with contrasting light grey dressings, finely finished to the margins. A base course, chamfered first-floor cills, a moulded eaves course, and kneelered gables with stone finials are notable architectural features. Regular fenestration is present on the basement level. Doorways, typically reached by stone steps flanked by decorative iron railings, have predominantly panelled timber doors with letterbox fanlights. Decorative timber round-arched dormers light the attic floor, with an exception at number 7.

The south (principal) elevation is symmetrical. Numbers 8 and 9 form a four-bay central pavilion with two doorways in the centre, regular fenestration above, and gabled bays flanking the sides. These flanking bays feature three-light canted windows extending from the ground to the first floor, creating a balcony with decorative iron brattishing at the attic floor, with a window positioned in the gablehead. Numbers 3-7 and 10-14 are linking blocks to the left and right of the central pavilion; these are three-bay houses with doorways to the right on the ground floor of numbers 3-7 and to the left on the ground floor of numbers 10-14. Numbers 2 and 15 form the terminal pavilions, each three-bay in design, with a central ground-floor doorway, flanked to the inner bay by a single window, and two windows above on the first and attic floors. The gabled outer bay has a ground-floor window and a first-floor oriel window, with a small two-pane window in the gablehead.

The east and west elevations are symmetrical, with regular fenestration to the two centre bays. Notably, oversized engaged circular towers flank the left and right bays, each with three windows on the ground and first floors, and two dormers with conical roofs featuring decorative iron finials.

The north elevation shows gabled bays advanced to the outer left and right, with near-regular fenestration to the basement, ground, and first floors. Some doorways and stairs lead to the first floor, and there's a variety of gabled additions with dormers and skylights illuminating the attic floor.

Predominantly four-pane timber sash and case windows are fitted throughout. The roof is grey slate with lead ridges. Coped gablehead and ridge stacks are topped with octagonal cans. Coped stone skews have blocked skewputts. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

The interiors were not inspected in 2000.

Decorative iron railings are positioned on the steps leading to the doorways of the principal elevation. Rough-faced, square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps mark the left and right sides of the south wall; the cap is missing to the pier on the outer right and the top half of a flanking pier is also missing. A low wall, formerly with railings, is situated between the gatepiers. A variety of brick-coped rubble walls exist on the north side.
