Description

13 Fonthill Terrace in Aberdeen is a pair of cottages built in the later 19th century. The building is single storey with an attic and basement, featuring four bays. The northeast elevation is made of tooled coursed granite ashlar, while the rest is constructed from coursed granite rubble, with finely finished margins. It has a base course, an eaves course, and piend-roofed canted timber dormers in the attic.

The northeast elevation is symmetrical, showcasing three-light canted windows from the basement to the ground floor, a dentil-moulded eaves course, and fishscale piended roofs with decorative ironwork railings over the central two bays. The outer left and right bays have doorways with steps leading up to pilastered panelled doors that include letterbox fanlights. There are four regularly placed dormers on the attic floor.

The northwest elevation is near-symmetrical with a gabled design, featuring an etched stained glass window slightly off-centre to the left in the basement and a round-arched etched and stained glass window at the centre of the gablehead.

The southwest elevation was not visible in 1999. The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, with a stained glass window off-centre to the right in the basement and a modern brick and cement opening off-centre to the left above. It also has a round-arched etched and stained glass window at the centre of the gablehead.

The windows throughout are predominantly two-pane and four-pane timber sash and case. The building has coped granite stacks with octagonal and circular cans, stone skews with blocked skewputts, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1999. Decorative cast-iron railings flank the steps to the doorways and run along a low granite wall to the northeast of the cottages.
