Description

55 Argyll Place, Aberdeen, was designed by J B Pirie and A Clyne and constructed between 1884 and 1885 as part of a 41-bay terraced development. The building is primarily a single-story structure with a half-story attic, although the rear elevation rises to two full stories. Numbers 55 and 57 are unique within this predominantly paired arrangement of four-bay cottages.

The exterior is constructed of rough-faced grey and pink granite with finely finished margins. A dark grey granite base course is present, along with a ground floor cill course, a dressed lintel band course, and a deep eaves course of pink granite, corniced with regularly spaced grey granite decorative features resembling navel-like paterae. The main entrance doors are panelled timber, incorporating glazed panels and letterbox fanlights; some retain original stained glass. Squat, bull-faced pilasters accentuate the doorways, although these are replaced by stylised anthemion motifs on the central columns of numbers 59-61, 63-65, 67-69, 71-73, and 75-77. Canted dormers feature timber dentil cornices, while rectangular dormers above the doorways also incorporate navel paterae to their lintels and iron daffodil finials.

The principal (east) elevation is nearly symmetrical. Number 55 has an asymmetrical two-bay design with a doorway on its south elevation. A canted window extends through the ground floor to form a dormer at the attic level on the left bay, and a bipartite window with knuckle detailing is present on the central astragal of the flanking right bay. A bipartite rectangular dormer sits above this. The outer left wall is curved and has been converted to an angle at lintel level. Number 57 is a three-bay cottage with a central ground floor doorway and flanking canted windows that act as dormers to the attic level. The other paired properties (numbers 59-93) consist of nine pairs of mirrored two-bay cottages; recessed doorways and associated rectangular dormers are located in the two central bays of the ground floor, while canted windows form dormers in the flanking outer bays. Elaborate, mansard-roofed rectangular dormers adjoin the rear of the canted dormers on numbers 75-77.

The north elevation is gabled and symmetrical, with a pair of windows on both the ground and first floors. The west elevation, which incorporates gabled wings and includes skylights to the attic, has seen additions and alterations. The south (rear) elevation showcases a gabled single-story porch connecting to number 53, with access to number 55 via a right return doorway.

The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, although some replacements exist. The roof is covered with grey slate and lead ridges, featuring stone skews. Stone coped gablehead and ridge stacks are topped with predominantly octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interiors were not inspected in 1999.

Low coped granite boundary walls enclose the eastern side, while the rear is defined by coped rubble walls.
