Description

This is a largely complete terrace of 34 cottages with an attic, designed by Archibald Simpson in 1843 and mainly constructed after 1849. The building is built from finely finished coursed granite rubble, with a prominent base course, eaves course, and dormers to the attic floor. Doorways are generally pilastered or feature timber fretwork carving above the lintel, with panelled timber doors and letterbox fanlights.

The main, northeast elevation is asymmetrical, but sections of it are symmetrical. Numbers 30, 44, 48, 50, 52 and 56 form a three-bay, symmetrical block with a central ground floor doorway flanked by windows. Dormers are positioned to the left and right of the attic floor, with a decorative round-arched dormer positioned between numbers 44, 48 and 52, a flat-roofed rectangular dormer between numbers 30 and 56. Number 32 presents an asymmetrical two-bay frontage, with a doorway to the left of the ground floor, flanked by a corniced window to the right. Further along the northeast elevation, numbers 34-42 are set on a raised terrace consisting of five two-bay houses; these have simple pedimented doorways to the right of the ground floor with single windows to the left, and a bipartite window to number 40. Numbers 46 and 54 are also asymmetrical, with doorways offset to the right of the ground floor, similarly flanked by windows.

The northwest elevation is symmetrical with a gable, featuring a doorway to number 56A, corniced with consoles. An adjoining boundary wall extends to the right. The southwest elevation is asymmetrical, characterised by a range of door and window openings, and predominantly tripartite, pedimented dormers that break the eaves, particularly visible on numbers 34-42. The southeast elevation is gabled.

The windows are primarily timber sash and case, with 2-pane and 12-pane glazing. Number 48 has timber windows with top hoppers. Some replacement windows have been introduced to the dormers. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a lead ridge. Stone skews are present alongside blocked skewputts to the north. It has coped gablehead and ridge stacks topped with circular and octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not inspected in 2000.

A coped granite rubble wall, including a George VI–type "C" letter box, runs along the north side of the property. A variety of rubble walls, mostly with brick coping, are found along the west side. A brick and rubble ancillary structure is located to the rear of number 48.
