Description
62 Springbank Terrace is a late 19th-century (circa 1876-81) terrace of houses designed by A Ellis and R G Wilson, built on a sloping site. The terrace comprises a central block of 24 bays, containing 13 houses with a single storey, attic, and basement, and two terminal blocks of two storeys, attic, and basement. The front elevation (north) features finely finished, tooled, coursed grey granite ashlar with rubble to the rear.
The central block has a basement recess with two windows, a deck leading to a doorway, and dormers breaking the eaves of the attic. Several panelled timber doors have been replaced, with stained glass in No 66 reading "ELLIS 66". The right terminal block has a doorway reached by five steps and regular fenestration. The left terminal block is asymmetrical, featuring shops at ground floor level and a mix of single and two-storey elements.
The west elevation is gabled with irregular fenestration. The south elevation has a predominantly door flanked by a window, and a small window flanked by a dormer. The east elevation contains infilling of doorways with shop windows, regularly placed windows on the first floor, and a central shouldered wallhead stack with a roundel and curvilinear string course.
Original four-pane timber sash and case windows remain in Nos 66, 68 and 70, with other windows replaced. The roof is grey slate, with lead ridges and stone skews. Coped granite ridges and stacks topped with octagonal cans are visible. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The interior of No 66 retains original features including a grid pattern and geometric plasterwork, cornices, a swag pattern frieze, and decorative plasterwork in alcoves. The interiors of the other houses have not been inspected recently. The site is enclosed by brick coped rubble boundary walls with decorative ironwork railings along the north side.
