Description
The Market Cross in Old Aberdeen was built when the area became a Burgh of Barony in the late 15th century. The original parts that still exist indicate that it may date back to the early 16th century.
The only surviving original feature of the 16th-century cross is the knop, which is adorned with four coats of arms, including that of Bishop Gavin Dunbar, who served from 1518 to 1532, and is topped with remnants of crouching beasts. The shaft of the cross was replaced in 1951, and the stepped base is modern.
