Description

This is a substantial villa built in 1880 by Ellis & Wilson, with later additions and alterations. It is located at 15 Queen's Road, Aberdeen, and stands two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and originally had three bays. The north-western elevation, the principal facade, is constructed of finely finished, tooled coursed grey granite, with Aberdeen bond granite rubble used elsewhere. It incorporates a base course, a dividing band course, segmental-arched openings on the first floor, and an eaves course with overhanging eaves. A symmetrical design features a half-sunken basement enclosed by decorative iron railings, a pilastered doorpiece to the central bay of the ground floor, topped with stylised acroteria finials, stone steps flanked by iron railings leading to the panelled timber door with letterbox fanlight, and a window to the centre of the first floor. Tripartite rectangular-plan windows extend through the basement and ground floors, creating a balcony to the first floor, with bipartite windows above.

The south-western elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a central gablet and a two-storey flat-roofed addition to the centre. Irregular fenestration, a couple of doorways, and a panelled timber door are present on the right return, along with a bipartite window to the basement floor. The south-eastern elevation also demonstrates asymmetry, with a bay advanced to the right, featuring a three-light canted window extending through the basement, ground and first floors, topped with piended roofs. A modern porch is located at the re-entrant angle to the left, with steps leading to a glazed porch at ground floor level. A round-arched window with modern stained glass is at first floor level, and bipartite windows are present at basement, ground and first floor levels. A tripartite rectangular-plan dormer is positioned in the centre of the attic floor. The north-eastern elevation has a central gablet, a panelled timber door with glazed panels flanking and a letterbox fanlight, a PVCu window to the right, paired windows to the centre of the ground and first floors, and stone steps ascending to the right.

Most windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, with a piended grey slate roof and lead ridges. Corniced gablehead stacks incorporate octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.

The interior retains some original features, including skirting boards, mouldings, architraves, panelled timber doors and cornicing, though a replacement dog-leg staircase has been installed. A decorative cornice is found in the principal room to the east of the ground floor, along with a panelled window surround and a fine timber fire surround featuring carved sunflower paterae and inset panels to the overmantle.

To the south of the villa stands a two-storey, L-plan ancillary structure constructed of Aberdeen bond granite rubble with finely finished margins. It features boarded double garage doors to Queen's Lane South, near-regular fenestration, a panelled timber door, a mixture of timber sash and case and replacement windows, a grey slate roof with a red tiled ridge, a coped gablehead stack with a circular can, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The property is further defined by square-plan granite ashlar gatepiers to the north-west (shared with adjacent properties), corniced with shallow pyramidal caps, low coped rough-faced granite walls between and granite and brick coped rubble walls to the remainder, all forming boundary walls.
