Description
This is a brick-lined underground passage of local historical interest, likely dating from between 1780 and 1799. The passage opening is segmental and features rubble granite piers supporting a brick head. Six modern stone steps lead down to the opening, which is now infilled with fixed iron bars. Modern railings enclose the structure. According to local tradition, the passage was reputedly used to transport prisoners from a former gaol near the present Bank of Ireland to Gallows Hill (now Heather Park) for execution. The passage is located within the Ballinacraig townland and lies within a conservation area.
