Description
Detached three-bay two-storey stone former house, built around 1860, with gabled two-storey stone outbuilding. The house is rectangular on plan, facing southeast on a remote hillside site north of Legananny Road, accessed via a long winding lane enclosed by rubblestone walls. Currently vacant and in storage use.
The main dwelling has pitched natural slate roofs with black clay ridge tiles and cement parged verges. The walls are coursed and snecked rubblestone with rough hewn squared quoins. Window openings are square-headed with stone lintels and sills; remnants of timber casement windows survive. The symmetrical three-bay two-storey front elevation features a central door opening now covered with corrugated iron and a central window that has been infilled. The west gable is blank. The rear elevation is blank except for a square-headed window opening at ground floor level. The east gable is also blank.
The stone outbuilding to the west is detailed similarly to the main house. Its east elevation has a pair of door openings at the centre and a further door opening above with a vertically-sheeted timber door. The north gable is abutted by a flight of rough hewn stone steps leading to a square-headed door opening with vertically-sheeted timber door. The west elevation contains a single opening at loft level and two diminutive openings at ground level. The south gable is abutted by a single-storey addition with a blocked-up door opening to the front and a further door opening to the east.
Some historic character and fabric survive, including the plan form, though much detailing has been lost. The buildings do not meet the statutory and policy tests as buildings of special architectural or historic interest.
The house first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1860. Griffith's Valuation of 1863 records James Westerman as occupier, leasing the property from the Earl of Annesley. The house then occupied a farm of over 14 acres and was noted as recently built and initially unfinished, valued at £2 with a rent of £6 10 shillings paid by the tenant. The property passed to the Bradford family in 1872—first David Bradford, then Thomas Bradford from 1877, and Alexander Bradford from 1889. By 1900 the Bradfords had sublet to James Dalzell, a linen weaver, possibly operating a handloom in the house, who lived with his wife, a dressmaker, and four teenage daughters. According to the 1901 census, three of the older daughters worked as seamstresses while the youngest, aged 12, was still in school. The house contained four rooms and was classified as second class, typical of the area. The house appears to have been vacant from 1909 to 1915 when John Dickson became occupier. By the First General Revaluation of 1933–34, the building was owned by Adam and then John Martin, no longer inhabited, and valued as an agricultural outbuilding at £1 10 shillings.
