Bridge, Bridge St., Rostrevor, Co.Down

The bridge, situated on Bridge Street in Rostrevor, County Down, likely dates to the 18th century. A road crossing the Rostrevor River was marked on maps from 1714, including a depiction of a bridge in 1755. An 1836 Ordnance Survey Memoir described a then-existing bridge as an "old plain structure of unhewn stone," measuring 70 feet long and 25 feet broad, with three arches crossing the Kilbroney or Rostrevor River. While the general description is similar to the present structure, the bridge’s neatly formed elliptical arches may indicate a later rebuild or modification. Historical photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries show the bridge without rendering on the arches and parapets, lending support to the theory that it is the original bridge recorded in 1836. The rendering on the parapet and arches appears to be a later 20th-century addition. The bridge is located within a conservation area and is owned by central government.
