Description

The Rostrevor Presbyterian congregation was founded in January 1850, with Reverend Thomas Morgan appointed as minister shortly afterwards. Worship was initially held in St Bronach's Church of Ireland parish church, where Morgan's ordination also took place. A fundraising campaign was launched for a purpose-built church, and the foundation stone was laid by local landlord David Ross of Bladensburg in summer 1851. The building was completed and opened in 1852, with the manse constructed directly behind it at around the same time. The architect's identity is not known.

According to the 1861 valuation, the church measured 10 yards by 17 yards 1 foot, with a height of 2 storeys, although it contained no gallery. The manse was described as "all very neat and nicely finished", comprising portions measuring 6 yards 1 foot by 6 yards 1 foot by 2 storeys and 4 yards 1 foot by 5 yards by 2 storeys.

The building was externally refurbished in the mid to later 20th century. The most notable change was the replacement of the original roof covering (presumed to be natural slate) with concrete pan-tiles. The gates and railings are included in the listing.

Mary Street, also known as the Warrenpoint Road, runs along the western side of Rostrevor and follows the original route between Kilkeel and Newry. By the late 1760s it had formed the western end of the village's main northeast-southwest axis. The street shows early development from the late 18th century onwards, with scattered buildings recorded on estate maps and the Ordnance Survey maps of 1834. Substantial expansion did not occur until the 1960s and the turn of the 21st century with new housing schemes. In 1877, what is now Shore Road was cut to the south of Mary Street to accommodate the Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Tramline, a horse-drawn service running approximately three miles from Warrenpoint railway station to Rostrevor Quay. The tramline operated from July 1877 until January 1915, when it closed due to falling revenue and storm damage.
