John Keenan Well, Ballydrumman Road, Banbridge, Co. Down

The John Keenan Well is a free-standing, enclosed stone well house dated 1844. It is located on the south side of Ballydrumman Road, to the west of Leitrim village, and sits at a lower level than the road, accessed by a short stone ramp. The well house is constructed from rubblestone, featuring a square-headed opening with a stone lintel inscribed with '1844 ERECTED by John Keenan' in painted lettering. A riveted wrought-iron pedestrian gate secures the opening. Inside, a stagnant pool is present, with a quadrant vault built from rectangular lintel stones, supported by the side walls and lime-washed. Relatively recent additions include stacked stone coping and rough-cast render to the roof and rear slope. The well is adjacent to a field gate to the east and, to the west, a modern rendered wall and railing belonging to a nearby dwelling. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps and valuation records, confirm the well’s construction by John Keenan, who farmed the land from at least 1828 and occupied it in 1856, although the farm was no longer in the Keenan family’s ownership by the 1870s. The structure is set within a rural location alongside Ballydrumman Road, close to a modern dwelling.
