Description

The Old St. Colman’s Hall, located in St. Colman’s Place, Newry, was a building constructed between 1700 and 1719. Originally a market house, it was demolished to make way for a new road. The building was first surveyed in 1969 and described as being built of rubble with dressed stone quoins, with some rendered and roughcast sections. The façade facing Castle Street was two stories high, while the rear of the building featured a pinnacled gablet and sloped steeply down St. Colman's Park. The front elevation included a cornice and parapet. It had two partly blocked, semi-circular headed window openings and two square-headed door openings on the ground floor; the first floor contained four square-headed window openings. It was recorded as derelict at the time of the survey. The building's history reportedly included use as a jail, market house, hall for the Irish Volunteers and Yeomanry, and a school, with documented gatherings of prominent public figures. The site lies within a conservation area and is owned by central government.
