Greer Mausoleum, Desertcreat Parish Church Churchyard, Tullyhogue, Cookstown, Co Tyrone

The Greer Mausoleum is an early Victorian structure built around 1840 by Thomas Greer of Tullylagan House. It is situated within Desertcreat Parish Church churchyard, near Tullyhogue, Cookstown, in County Tyrone, and retains a very good and intact appearance. This neo-classical mausoleum is a rare example in Northern Ireland, showcasing an unusual combination of neo-Egyptian and neo-Greek detailing. It forms part of a visually appealing group with the nearby Desertcreat Parish Church and the Lowry Mausoleum, and enjoys a pleasant rural churchyard setting.

The mausoleum is a single-storey rectangular chamber constructed of cut ashlar sandstone, featuring battered (sloping) sides. It has a wide, overhanging Egyptian-style cornice, and a double-stepped flat roof topped by a broad obelisk at the rear, set on a platform. A sarcophagus is mounted on a small podium in front of the obelisk. The north-facing entrance is in the centre of the front elevation, featuring a rectangular four-panelled cast iron door within a moulded and lugged surround. The surround's outer jambs have a battered profile in a classical Greek style. The obelisk itself is constructed of ashlar sandstone with a shallow pyramidal top. The side walls are similar to the front and incorporate central blind rectangular recesses with plain reveals, where the head of the stone block is cut into the stone above. The rear wall mirrors this design. The ground slopes to the rear, revealing a base of rubble masonry beneath the plinth. The doorway has a projecting plinth, a projecting plain frieze, and a coved cornice surmounted by two stepped blocking courses. The mausoleum was reportedly last used for an interment in 1907.
