Description

A detached two-storey three-bay house with square porch at Soarn Road, Curglassan, built in the early nineteenth century and extended in the later nineteenth century. The house is set back from the road with a small front garden and outbuildings to the rear.

The building has a rectangular plan with a pitched slate roof and faces northeast towards the road. External walls are rendered in wetdash throughout. The northeast front elevation features a central flat-roofed projecting square porch with a segmental-headed doorway at its centre. The door is a replacement timber door with fanlight and sidelights. The porch front displays decorative plasterwork in geometric patterns, which may be a later addition. The porch is flanked by two square-headed windows with one-over-one timber sash windows, plain painted surrounds and sills, and border panes divided by astragals. Three similar windows appear on the upper storey. The southeast gable elevation is rendered in dashed finish with a single upper-storey window opening and decorative bargeboard to the eaves. A dashed chimney rises to the apex. The rear southwest elevation is also dashed render with a central square porch similar to that at the front, and windows consisting of a mixture of original sash windows and replacement timber windows. The northwest gable elevation is similar to the southeast. Four chimneys are evenly spaced along the ridge. Rainwater goods are plastic.

To the rear of the house, perpendicular to it, stands a slightly dilapidated two-storey stone outbuilding in coursed rubble with red brick detailing, pitched slate roof, and several square-headed door and window openings to the southeast elevation.

The site boundaries are partially planted with mature trees. A storey-height stone wall in coursed rubble extends from the eastern corner. A pathway extends from the front door to the road, terminating at a decorative cast-iron pedestrian gate with painted square piers.

Historical records indicate a house occupied this site from the 1833–34 Ordnance Survey map. The building was recorded as a relatively modest single-storey structure in the first valuation, and in the 1857 second valuation was listed with a rateable value of £3–10–0, indicating a single-storey dwelling. Thomas Wilson was noted as occupant, with S.D. Cromelin Esq. (probably Samuel Delacherois Crommelin) as immediate lessor. The property remained within the Wilson family until 1907 when William McCrea became tenant. The conversion to its present two-storey form likely occurred around this time, though contemporary valuations do not record the alteration. James Morrow took over the tenancy in 1952, with Robert McCrea as immediate lessor.
