Bridge, Limekiln Lane, Cookstown, Co Tyrone

This is a single-arch road bridge constructed of rubble stone, dating to circa 1855, that spans a former railway line at Limekiln Lane, Cookstown. The bridge is representative of the transport heritage of Cookstown and its connection to the development of the Northern Ireland rail network. It has part-overgrown snecked rock-faced stone walls, with rounded stone capping to the centre of the road-level wall and rubble stone capping to the outer edges. The bridge features a segmental-headed arch constructed with rubble stone voussoirs and rubble stone soffits. The bridge was built as part of the Belfast & Ballymena Railway Company’s line from Randalstown to Cookstown, which opened on 10th November 1856. Charles Lanyon served as the line's engineering architect, with William Dargan as the contractor. The railway line closed in August 1950, and the archway of the bridge has largely been filled in. The field to the east side of the bridge has undergone substantial raising of its ground level. The bridge shares group value with other nearby railway-related structures identified by reference numbers HB09/13/019, HB09/13/029, and HB09/13/031. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
