Description

Ballyronan School is a detached single-storey former schoolhouse built between 1856 and 1858 to designs by Robert Young of Belfast. It now functions as an Orange Hall.

The building was constructed by the Salters' Company, local landowners, at a cost of £464 with S. Crawford as contractor. It replaced two separate male and female schools that had previously occupied nearby sites shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1853-56. The new school is recorded in the valuation book of 1860 as a "National School house [with] garden and playground" and appears to have remained operational until at least 1955, when it was subsequently converted to a hall sometime in the late 1970s or 1980s.

The building is rectangular in plan with a pitched roof of natural slate. The front east elevation, which faces onto the Shore Road, is symmetrical and composed of a gable-end to the left, a single-storey projecting porch, a recessed six-bay central portion, a single-storey projecting porch to the right, and a further gable-end. The end gables contain no openings and feature blind roundels at high level. The projecting porches have narrow round-headed windows to the front and square-headed timber sheeted doors. The central recess originally contained six square-headed windows, now boarded up but with boarding painted to resemble a timber sash pattern. A cut-stone datestone inscribed "BROTHER T. FORSYTHE L.O.L. 120 MEMORIAL ORANGE HALL" is positioned at the centre of the elevation. The side elevations to the north and south are blank. The rear west elevation is rendered and contains a single square-headed timber door at its centre.

External walls are whitewashed roughcast render with a painted rendered and stone plinth. The gable ends to the front elevation have projecting eaves with painted timber corbel brackets. Rainwater goods are cast-iron.

In its original form, the building possessed two rear returns, probably quarters for the schoolmaster and schoolmistress. A decorative ventilation fleche, shown on Young's original 1856 drawings and on photographs from circa 1900, had been removed prior to 1975. When the structure was converted to a hall, all rear appendages were demolished, chimneys removed, paired windows to the front gables and a doorway to the south side blocked, and the interior layout and detailing altered. Window openings have since been bricked over and verges, eases and soffits are now clad in uPVC.

The Orange Hall is set behind a rendered wall with cut-stone capping that fronts onto the Shore Road within the centre of Ballyronan. Pedestrian gates to the left and right have raised pillars and are constructed of unpainted wrought iron.
