Description
This former building at 43 Molesworth Street, Cookstown, has little remaining architectural interest. It was a single-storey cement-rendered structure, originally a house built around 1872, which has since been demolished to create a car park and access to rear properties. A coach arch to the right of the building remains intact, though no original fabric survives.
The building formed part of a complex of outbuildings constructed around 1879 for the neighbouring large house to the west (present numbers 39 and 41), itself built in 1872 by William Mason. Mason was the original occupant of the property. By 1883, a Matthew Mason was resident alongside William, with both Matthew and Richard Mason recorded as tenants the following year.
In 1893 the property was subdivided, with this structure and half of the rear outbuildings forming a separate lease, initially held by James Mason but occupied by Matthew and Richard Mason. By 1899, Richard Mason became sole tenant, and by 1912 he had acquired the lease of the larger property. In 1924 the larger lease passed to Silas G. Glasgow, with Samuel Glasgow as occupant. A year later, the smaller property's lease was acquired by Hugh Donnelly, who had occupied the building since 1916. He was succeeded by William Donnelly in 1948. Around 1956–57 the building was acquired by Patrick MacMahon, who held it until at least 1972. The structure was demolished sometime after 1975.
