Bridge, Wellbrook Road, Cookstown, Co Tyrone

This is a double-arch, humpback road bridge of rubble stone construction, built around 1760. It spans the Ballinderry River on the west side of Cookstown, close to Wellbrook Mill (listed separately as HB09/04/003) and sharing group value with it. The bridge is approximately 6 metres wide and has rock-faced random rubble stonewalls finished with irregular stone capping. The arches are semi-circular, with cut-stone dressings. A distinctive stepped and curved cutwater is present on the upstream side. Cut stone steps lead down from the road level to the riverbank at the northeast corner.

The bridge’s humpback design, small semicircular arches, and narrow width suggest an early origin, and it represents an increasingly rare example of its type. While the precise date is uncertain, it's likely to pre-date the 1830s. Historical records indicate a connection to Hugh Faulkner of Wellbrook, who secured County Grand Jury funding for road improvements around 1766. A plan of the Wellbrook bleachgreen, dated 1766, appears to show a bridge at this location, potentially the existing structure. The bridge is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833-34 and subsequently. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest and holds local historical significance.
