Description

This is an unusual structure combining a late Georgian cast iron plaque and a replacement fountain. The plaque references an earlier public water supply, while the fountain itself was likely installed between 1920 and 1939. Together, they represent an important connection to a time when drinking water was primarily sourced from public facilities.

The fountain is a standard design manufactured by Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock, featuring a plain, fluted column. Affixed to the wall behind the fountain is a cast-iron plaque. The inscription reads: "This/ fountain was erected by the/ subscription of Sir Hugh Stewart/ baronet and the inhabitants of/ the town of Ballygawley in the/ year of our Lord one thou/ sand eight hundred and/ thirty six". Below the inscription is a coat of arms, followed by "Phoenix Foundry/ Newry/ 1836". The plaque is associated with records HB13/09/017.

A water trough is marked on the 1935 Ordnance Survey map (PRONI Ref OS 10/6/52/16/1), suggesting the fountain was present by that time. A pump was not shown on the 1907 map. The plaque refers to a fountain in place in 1836, but the current fountain was installed later, as it utilizes pressurised mains water, a system not available until the early twentieth century.

The structure exhibits industrial archaeological interest. It is owned by the Presbyterian Church and is of local interest, demonstrating social, cultural and economic importance due to its authorship and rarity. The architectural qualities of style, proportion, ornamentation and setting are also notable.
