Description

23-25 Fenaghy Road is a Grade B1 listed house occupying a prominent roadside position facing west at the north end of Galgorm village on the road to Cullybackey. The building dates to 1794, as indicated by a plaque bearing the date and the initials "RCM".

Originally constructed as a pair of semi-detached dwellings, the house has been converted to single occupancy with modification of the interior layout. It is of one and a half storeys. The front and side elevations display a coloured pink roughcast finish, while exposed fieldstone walling appears at the left rear of the main block. Rear extensions have been finished with textured pink rendering to match the main building. The roof is thatched between raised cement parapet gables with square-cut eaves and three rows of scallops at the ridge. Three red brick corbelled chimneys with projecting bases rise from the gables, each fitted with a single pot, with a fourth similar feature positioned off-centre on the ridgeline above the living room fireplace.

The front elevation is composed of a symmetrical sequence of openings from north to south: a pair of windows, an entrance door, a single window, an entrance door, and a further pair of windows. The timber-framed windows are vertically sliding with lattice panes. The timber doors consist of opposed diagonal sheeting surmounted by lattice-paned fanlights. All openings are set in moulded surrounds; the entrance openings terminate at ground level in door blocks with window sills of intermediate depth. The elevation is finished with a plain projecting base. The upper floor is lit by pairs of lattice-paned casements in the gables and small rooflights. Lattice-paned casements, modern windows, and glazed doors are used at the rear.

An independent gabled building has been erected at the rear, incorporating an existing fieldstone wall, red brickwork, and pink textured finish. It features glazed double entrance doors and windows set in pointed openings.

The building was re-thatched in 1986 and underwent a major renovation scheme including re-thatching in 1996. When first recorded in the 1859 valuation, it comprised two semi-detached dwellings leased to Hugh Beattie and Andrew McNeice, each measuring 7 yards by 5 yards by 1¾ storeys with a return of 6 yards by 2 yards by 1½ storeys.
