Description

A detached three-bay two-storey over basement rendered house built around 1800, now operating as a nursery. The building is prominently sited on an elevated position to the southwest of Glebe Park roundabout in Moira, facing east.

The house is square on plan and retains most of its original Georgian style and proportions, though the interior has been substantially modernised. It features a full-height three-sided canted bay to the south side elevation and a single-storey over basement wing spanning the rear elevation. The building was originally constructed in stages, with a stone dated 1811 found in the kitchen, and a bay was added to the south elevation as shown on the 1858 Ordnance Survey map.

The roof is a double-pile hipped design covered in natural slate with black ridge tiles and lead valleys. A large rendered chimneystack with octagonal clay pots rises from the rear elevation. The walls are rendered with ruled-and-lined cement finish, rusticated quoins, and a projecting water table course. Window openings are square-headed with concrete sills; the upper storeys retain replacement timber sash windows while basement windows are uPVC. The front elevation has a central round-headed door opening with an original painted masonry surround featuring impost mouldings and a keystone; a projecting cement surround with replacement flat-panelled timber door and spoked timber fanlight was added around 2005.

The south side elevation contains the canted bay to the rear section and a single window opening to the ground floor of the front section, with a square-headed door opening below having a timber-panelled door with glazed panels. The north side has six window openings to the rear section, a single opening to the front section, and windows to the rear wing, all with timber sash windows except the basement level which is uPVC and ramped to ground floor. The rear wing is three bays, two storeys over basement, with a lean-to hipped natural slate roof. A lucarne-type fire escape with iron stair and a timber glazed door with iron bridge and steps over the basement area were added around 2005.

The setting comprises bituminous macadam parking areas to the east, south and west, with a lawned margin, all enclosed to Glebe Park roundabout and Glebe Park Road by replacement steel estate railing.

The building originally appeared on the 1833 Ordnance Survey maps as "Glebe House" with a rectangular plan form. According to Lewis' Topographical History, it was built in 1799 for £710. Early maps also show adjacent outbuildings which no longer survive. The rectory was built in stages, and by the 1858 Ordnance Survey map, the south elevation bay had been added. The building functioned as the residence of the Rector of St John's Parish Church, located at the opposite end of Moira Main Street. Griffiths Valuation of 1861 recorded the rector as Rev. William Henry Wynne, who served from 1836 to 1873 and was buried in the church graveyard. Throughout the Annual Revisions from 1866 to 1929, the dwelling remained the rector's residence, though it was not captioned as "Rectory" on the Ordnance Survey maps until the 1903 edition.

The 1933–57 Revaluation Binders recorded the accommodation as comprising 2 receptions, box room, kitchen, pantry, basement, 4 bedrooms, bath and lavatory. Contemporary inspection notes from 1935 described it as "an old rectory situated at the head of the village of Moira on the main road" with a basement that was "poor and damp" and used only for storage, having been superseded by a ground-floor kitchen. The notes observed that despite the house's size, the accommodation was poor, with only 4 bedrooms and a dressing room on the first floor and an old-fashioned bathroom. The rectory ceased its ecclesiastical function and has undergone various internal and external alterations, with consequent loss of character.

The building was comprehensively renovated around 2005 for conversion to commercial use as a nursery. Although modernisation has removed some of the character of this Georgian house, the building retains its original rectangular plan form, external openings, and historical connections to St. John's Parish Church, remaining an important landmark in Moira.
