Description
This building serves as the Cellular Administration Block, a key administrative centre for the entire Maze Prison complex, particularly the Cellular Unit. Constructed between 1960 and 1979, it is distinguished as one of the few structures within the prison to have a full second storey. The building’s group value is recognized in conjunction with other listed structures in the vicinity.
The freestanding building is enclosed within a metal fence and situated within Zone F2, bounded on the west by the perimeter wall and on the east by an administrative zone road and internal fences. It is located north of the Cellular Health Care Facility and south of the Administrative Libraries, separated by a high fence. The two-storey building functioned as an administrative and emergency control centre, aligned north-south. It is characterised by concrete walls with brick facing, a flat roof, and a rectangular plan. A taller, wider element extends from the north side, featuring a prominent central section on the north elevation. The south half of the east and west elevations have regular fenestration. The north end of the east elevation lacks windows, while the west elevation has high-level security windows on the first floor. Fenestration on the north elevation is limited to the west side. The building incorporates steel-framed windows, a main north-facing entrance with timber doors and small viewing panels, and a secondary south-facing entrance using timber with an upper glazed panel. While the building is two stories high, it does not take advantage of potential views. The listing extends to the emergency control room. The architect was the Chief Architects Division, Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland) Works Service. Interior features and its setting contribute to its overall character. The building played a pivotal role in the control and command of the entire prison and is directly associated with significant events within its history, as detailed further in HB19/04/030.
