Description
Lisboy Bridge is an attractive and well-constructed three-span road-over-river bridge, built around 1820, carrying the Drumeen Road over the Camowen River. It is located in a rural area to the north-east of Edenderry village. The bridge represents the development of the road network in the county and is a robust example of early-nineteenth century engineering work, notable for its size and good detailing.
The bridge is aligned north-south and features roughly coursed squared-and-snecked sandstone walling to the abutments, spandrels, and parapets. Dressed sandstone forms the V-cutwaters on both faces, with a string course marking carriageway level, and soldier coping along the parapets. The three segmental-headed arches have dressed sandstone voussoirs, with the arch soffits finished in cement rendering. The single carriageway is approximately seven metres wide, flanked by tarmac pavements. The bridge is situated on the Drumeen Road within a rural landscape and is surrounded by grass embankments.
Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1833, 1854, and 1906, reference Lisboy Bridge. Accounts from 1802 highlight the attention given to roads and bridges in County Tyrone, with significant investment in road construction facilitated by readily available local building materials like basalt, gravel, and limestone. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
