Description

Detached two-bay two-storey house dated 1830, located on the south side of Church Road, Beragh. The building remains largely intact in its massing, proportions, and plan form with largely intact internal detailing, though it represents a common vernacular type rather than an exceptional example.

The main body is rectangular on plan, facing south, with a central single-storey entrance porch to the south and a two-storey return with pitched roof to the north, both additions built circa 1900. The roof is pitched natural slate with blue and black clay ridge tiles. Two red brick corbelled gable chimneystack rise through the roofline. A corbelled eaves course supports original u-profile cast-iron rainwater goods.

The walls are ruled-and-lined rendered with stepped plastered quoins. Windows throughout are square-headed 2/2 vertically divided timber sliding sashes with projecting masonry cills. The principal south elevation is abutted at its centre by the single-storey entrance porch; the exposed section contains one window to each bay at both floors. The west gable is blank. The rear north elevation is abutted at its centre by the two-storey return with hipped natural slate roof; the exposed section contains one window to each bay at both floors. The east gable contains a single window at first floor on its left side.

The two-storey north return is detailed as the main house. Its north gable contains replacement timber casements at each floor. The left cheek features a timber-sheeted and glazed entrance door on the left with a timber casement on the right; the first floor is blank. The right cheek is blank.

A series of outbuildings stands adjacent to the house. At the west is a single-storey corrugated metal-sheeted outbuilding with pitched roof. To the east stands a two-storey traditionally constructed outbuilding with natural slate pitched roof, lime-rendered random rubble walling, and scattered fenestration of timber-sheeted doors and timber casement windows. At the north is a single-storey open cart-shed with corrugated metal-sheeted barrel roof and lime-rendered random rubble walling.

The house is accessed by lane from north and south. The now largely overgrown south enclosed garden contains original square-plan piers adjoining each gable, each supporting original wrought-iron gates giving access to the south principal entrance. Some wrought-iron railing remains around the perimeter of the south enclosed garden.

A building is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833, although the extensions to the north and south elevations do not appear until the 1936-8 edition. This suggests a house that has undergone substantial remodelling circa 1900 but was built around an earlier structure. Griffith's Valuation records a house, offices and land occupied by Andrew Young and leased from the Rev. Lucas and Lord Belmore, valued at £1 15 shillings. The Young family remained in occupation throughout the period of Valuation Revisions from 1860 to 1929.
