Description
This detached ruined church stands in the centre of Donacavey Old Churchyard, to the east of Church Street in Fintona. Originally built in 1641, it retains the form of a rectangular nave with a square tower added around 1820 to the west end.
The church is constructed of coursed rubble walling with fieldstone quoins. The principal elevation faces south and contains four openings, of which the central two retain their sills. The original windows were gothic in stepped sandstone surrounds, though these have now gone. The east gable contains a chancel window opening with rubble voussoirs and remains of sandstone tracery, though the sill and tracery are partially fallen away. The north elevation is largely blank, with the central section having fallen away.
The west gable is abutted at its centre by a three-stage tower. Each stage contains a single window to the north, west and south elevations, separated by sandstone string courses. A corbelled frieze runs to the top. The third stage window is larger and is surmounted by hood moulding with label stops. A pointed-arched-headed entrance opening faces south. To the east, a double-height segmental-headed entrance opening with rubble voussoirs provides access to the nave.
The church encloses a selection of gated memorial plots and wall-mounted memorial stones, including the seventeenth-century Gilbert Eccles monument (HB11/02/009), alongside eighteenth- and nineteenth-century examples. To the south wall, red brick pointed-arched-headed voussoirs over pointed-segmental voussoirs with brick repairs surround a memorial stone.
The churchyard, bounded to the road at the west by a rubble retaining wall surmounted by iron railings, is accessed via stone steps leading to a pair of square ashlar sandstone piers with concrete coping supporting wrought-iron gates. Further entrance gates stand to the north. The surrounding churchyard contains eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twentieth-century grave markers.
According to local history sources, the church was built in 1642 just outside the walls of Leigh's castle, with stone window frames brought from a previous church destroyed during the 1641 war. The tower was added in 1818. The building was closed and deconsecrated in 1839. The first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 shows the church, but by the second edition of 1854 it is marked as ruined. The Townland Valuation Records of 1828–40 valued the church at £12 2s 0d, but it does not appear in Griffith's Valuation of 1856–64. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs contain two references to the church: one describing it as a rectangular building with a square steeple capable of holding 800 persons, and a later account noting it in "a very bad state of repair" and capable of holding 600 persons, with reference to a sum of £480 raised towards building a new church.
