Description
An attached multi-bay two-storey mill building (single-storey at yard to east due to topography), built c.1840, located on the south side of Badoney Road at Trillick. The building is of common construction with whitened random rubble walls and fieldstone quoins. The pitched roof is corrugated metal. Windows are timber-framed and doors are square-headed vertically-sheeted timber. The principal gable faces east and contains large double-leaf doors accessing the first floor, supported by a stone lintel. The south elevation contains a window and door to the left, with an outbuilding abutting to the right. The west gable is blank but features a wall-mounted cast-iron waterwheel in poor repair. The north elevation is blank and abutted at the left by an outbuilding.
The complex is set perpendicular to the road within a yard. An attached two-storey outbuilding to the south, largely rebuilt in concrete and detailed as a mill, contains large double-leaf doors flanked by a metal casement window on its north elevation. At the north, a flat-roofed rendered link block containing a single door connects to a two-storey outbuilding, built c.1820 and also detailed as a mill. Its east elevation contains a single door accessing the first floor flanked by a small window opening; the north gable contains a small window opening with a timber lintel and sandstone sill at first floor, surmounted by a dovecote to the loft. The west elevation is abutted at ground floor by a lean-to with a single door supported by a timber lintel; the exposed section above contains two window openings with timber lintels at first floor. Rainwater goods are cast-iron. The yard is accessed from the road at the north through a pair of smooth rendered pillars in rendered walling.
The mill complex is first recorded on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1852, shown with a Mill Stream. A building to the south appears on the 1833 map, and an outbuilding to the south east appears on the first edition map. All four editions of the Ordnance Survey map label the group as a "Corn Mill". The Townland Valuation lists it as a corn mill, house and offices occupied by John McGrath and leased from General Archdale, valued at £4 17 shillings. Griffith's Valuation records the plot as a "corn mill and kiln" valued at £8 15 shillings, later increased to £10 when a nearby house was included. The occupier was James Murphy, the property leased from Captain Archdale. Valuation Revisions records various changes in occupier within the Murphy family, with the valuation decreasing to £5 15 shillings from £10 by 1901.
Although the building and attached outbuildings are no longer in use, the waterwheel can still be seen, demonstrating the original function of the complex. The building is of local and industrial archaeological interest but has been compromised by various alterations that have reduced its architectural and historic interest. It is not among the best examples of the mill type.
