Description
The “Bloody Bridge” is a substantial six-span road-over-river bridge, built around 1820, that carries the Edenderry Road over the Camowen River. It is a robust example of early-nineteenth century engineering, notable for its size and detailing, and represents the development of the road network in the county.
The bridge features roughly coursed squared-and-snecked sandstone abutments, spandrels, and parapets, with V-cutwaters to both faces. Stone soldier coping defines the parapets. Six segmental-headed arches, constructed with sandstone voussoirs, form the bridge; four arches span the river to the east, while two are flood arches over grass verges to the west. The exposed rubble soffits are also of sandstone. The single carriageway is approximately five metres wide, flanked by grass verges.
The bridge is situated on the Edenderry Road in a rural landscape west of Edenderry village, with grass embankments to all sides. A public fishing area lies to the northeast. Historical records, including the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 and the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, refer to the bridge. Accounts from 1802 and 1833 highlight the importance placed on road construction and maintenance in County Tyrone, with local landowners actively involved and abundant building materials contributing to the ease of construction.
