Description
Holy Trinity Church is a detached Church of Ireland church built around 1860, located on the east side of Beltany Road at the corner of Rash Road in Omagh. This modestly scaled rural church is plainly detailed but enriched by well-constructed stonework and detailing, retaining original features both externally and internally.
The church consists of a rectangular nave with a chancel to the east, abutted on the north by a single-storey vestry, and a single-storey gabled porch to the south. The pitched roofs are covered in natural slate over sandstone corbels, with blue and black clay ridge tiles and raised stone verges bearing cross finials on cavetto-moulded kneelers. A gabled bellcote with stepped weathering sits to the west, containing a bronze bell housed within a chamfered gothic aperture.
The walls are constructed of roughly squared-and-snecked rubble over a splayed plinth with sandstone quoins. Windows throughout are gothic in character, containing lattice lights set in stepped sandstone surrounds with rubble voussoirs. The principal gable faces west and contains a group of three windows surmounted at the centre by a quatrefoil oculus. The north elevation is five windows wide. The east gable is abutted at its centre by the chancel, which features a central plate tracery window flanked on either side by further windows, with a single window to the south. The vestry, abutted at the right of the east gable, has a cat-slide roof and contains a pair of windows with shared voussoirs. A square-headed vertically sheeted timber entrance door with decorative strap hinges, set in a chamfered shouldered sandstone surround, stands to the north and is flanked to its right by a single window. The south elevation is five windows wide; the second window is abutted by the gabled porch, which contains a gothic entrance opening with double-leaf horizontally sheeted timber doors bearing decorative strap hinges, with single windows to the east and west.
The church stands within an elevated churchyard bounded on all sides by rubble walling and hedging, accessed through a pair of square pillars supporting cast-iron gates at the east and west. A modern hall, built around 2000, stands to the north-west within a car park bounded to the road by timber fencing.
A brass memorial plaque inside the church reads "In Memory of / her Beloved Son George Thomas Spiller / This Church / is Erected / by his / Affectionate Mother / A.D.1862", with additional memorials of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century date. Valuation records document the building valuation revising from £17 5s to £34 5s in 1865, with a note recording that the church cost £1,500. The church first appears on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905–6.
