Description

A detached three-bay single-storey vernacular dwelling built around 1820, situated on the south side of Inishative Road, Carrickmore. The building is of simple construction and materials typical of rural dwellings of this period, though it represents a relatively common type rather than an exceptional example of traditional architecture.

The house is rectangular in plan with a small wind-break porch to the north and a bed outshot to the south. Attached single-storey outbuildings stand to the east and west. The walls are of rubble construction, lime-rendered throughout. The pitched roof is covered in corrugated metal, probably replacing original thatch, with raised sandstone verges. Lime-rendered chimneys feature brick corbelled coping. Rainwater goods are cast-iron.

The principal elevation faces north, divided into three bays. The left bay contains a single 6/6 sliding sash window. The central bay has a window flanked on the left by the wind-break porch, which features a sandstone canopy and a vertically-sheeted timber entrance door. The right bay contains a single window. Windows throughout are timber-framed 1/1 sliding sashes with margin lights, set within smooth rendered architraves with keyblock detail and painted masonry sills.

The east gable is abutted by a rubble outbuilding with windows and doors now removed. The south elevation has a bed outshot with catslide roof at its centre; exposed sections on either side each contain a single window with brick surround. The west gable is abutted by a rubble byre with metal casement windows. This structure is partially lime-rendered and has been rebuilt in parts; the eaves level has been raised with concrete blockwork, and purlin-ends are exposed at eaves.

The setting comprises a small farmyard to the north-east, enclosed by a single-storey outbuilding to the north and accessed through a wrought-iron gate. The property occupies a corner position in private farmland, bounded to the rear by vegetation.

The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833. Although not included in the Townland Valuation as its value was too low, Griffith's Valuation of 1858 records three entries under the same plot reference, each listed as a 'house and office' valued at £0 10s. John, Peter and Henry Kelly are recorded as occupiers, with the property leased from Sir John Stewart, Baronet. Valuation Revisions record only two entries subsequently; Peter Kelly's house is valued at £1, with no significant changes recorded thereafter between 1860 and 1924.
