Description
A detached two-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling built around 1850, located on the east side of Coolaharan Road near Omagh. The building is well preserved and retains much of its original fabric and detailing. Traditional features such as the bed outshot and hearth remain unaltered and are of particular interest. The dwelling is sited within a farmyard, and together with its associated farm buildings, represents a good example of vernacular architecture and a way of life once common but now increasingly rare.
The house has a direct-entry rectangular plan with a small wind-break porch to the south and a single-storey lean-to extension to the north, built around 1930. The pitched roof is finished in natural slate with raised concrete verges and rustic brick corbelled chimneys. The walls are roughcast rendered. The principal elevation faces south; the left bay contains two timber casement windows, whilst the right bay contains the wind-break porch with a vertically-sheeted timber half-door at the left, flanked at the right by a single window. The windows are timber framed 2/2 sliding sash, though many have been largely replaced by timber casements, with painted masonry sills. The west gable is blank. The north elevation is abutted at the left by the lean-to extension, with the exposed section to the right remaining blank. The lean-to is smooth rendered with a corrugated metal roof and contains a single metal casement window to the west and north. The east gable is blank and abutted by a boundary wall.
The farmyard setting includes a replacement dwelling built around 1970 to the south. The farmyard is enclosed to the east by a single-storey stable-block with corrugated metal roof and whitened rendered walling. Adjacent to this are a gabled byre abutted at the south, a mono-pitched store abutted to the south-east corner of the house, a small single-storey flat-roofed byre to the south, and a single-storey garage to the south-west extended to the south, with corrugated metal roof and smooth rendered walls.
Historical records indicate that a building shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 may have survived as an outbuilding to the current house. A building conforming to the current footprint first appears on the second edition map of 1854, though it cannot be easily determined whether it has been rebuilt since that time. The buildings do not appear in the Townland Valuation but are recorded in Griffith's Valuation of 1858 as a "house and land" occupied by Hugh Coyle and leased from Sir John Stewart, Baronet. The building was valued at 7 shillings annually. Annual Revisions from 1860 to 1929 record an increase in value to 10 shillings, with the occupier revised to Patrick Coyle in 1871. After 1933, the occupier is revised to James Toner and the value is raised to £1 5 shillings. At that time the house comprised one room and a kitchen and was constructed of rubble masonry with a slate roof.
